How to Set Up MetaTrader 5 for Gold Trading (UK Beginner Guide)
7 min read · Updated 25 September 2026
MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the platform most gold traders use — it's free, it runs on desktop and mobile, and every serious broker (including PU Prime) offers XAU/USD through it. It's also where new traders lose money fastest, because the platform makes it just as easy to place a reckless trade as a disciplined one.
This guide walks through the MT5 setup for gold trading in the right order — install, log in, find the right symbol, and place a properly protected first trade.
Step 1: Get MetaTrader 5
Download MT5 from the official MetaQuotes site or your broker. Install the desktop version on a laptop if you can — the extra screen space matters for charts — and add the mobile app for monitoring positions away from the desk. Both are free.
Skip unofficial 'modded' versions and Telegram APK downloads entirely: a trading platform that handles your account credentials should come from the broker or MetaQuotes, nowhere else.
Step 2: Log in with your broker account
Open MT5, choose File → 'Login to Trade Account', and enter the login number, password and server from your broker (PU Prime issues these when your account is verified — check their app or your email for the exact server name). Once connected, the symbol list in Market Watch populates and your account balance shows in the Navigator.
If you've just opened a PU Prime account through the Midlands referral route, this login comes after verification — the community's beginner support walks new members through this exact step.
Step 3: Find gold — the XAU/USD symbol
In Market Watch, right-click → 'Show All' (or Symbols) and look for XAUUSD — it may appear with a suffix like XAUUSD.a or GOLD depending on the broker. Right-click → 'Chart Window' to open the gold chart. Set it to H1 (one-hour candles) to start: long enough to see structure clearly, short enough to see the sessions.
Learn the difference between bid and ask early: the chart's candles typically show the bid, and the gap between bid and ask (the spread) is wider during quiet hours — one reason liquid sessions matter.
Step 4: Understand the order settings before you click
Press F9 (or New Order) and look at what you're actually being asked: volume (lot size), stop loss, take profit. Three settings protect every trade:
- Volume — the lot size. 0.01 is the minimum on most accounts; start there, always.
- Stop loss — the price where the trade exits at a loss. Set it EVERY time, before the trade, never after.
- Take profit — the price where profit is banked. Set it with the trade, so management isn't left to emotion.
Step 5: Size the position from the stop, not the other way round
The correct sequence is: decide where the trade is wrong (the stop distance), then size the position so that the stop costs no more than 1–2% of the account. With a £300 account that's £3–£6 risk per trade — which at typical gold stop distances means the smallest lot sizes are exactly right for a first account.
New traders size first and squeeze the stop to fit; experienced traders place the stop first and let it determine size. It's the single biggest habit difference in trading.
Step 6: Practise the mechanics before the money
MT5 supports demo accounts — use one until placing a protected order is boring: buy, sell, stop loss, take profit, closing a position, reading the account history. Then move to live with the smallest size, because execution psychology only shows up with real money at stake — and only at a size where a mistake is a lesson, not a disaster.
A simple journal (screenshot, entry, stop, target, outcome, what you'd do differently) turns every trade — win or lose — into education. The MGT community's honest post-mortem culture exists exactly for this.
Step 7: Trade gold with support, not alone
Platform mechanics are the easy half; knowing what to do when gold spikes through your level during the New York open is the part that takes community. Midlands Gold Traders members get live session coverage, education nights, beginner support for MT5 setup, and the MGT room set — free once your own PU Prime account is funded with the £300 minimum.
And the permanent fine print applies to every trade you place in MT5: gold CFDs are leveraged, losses can exceed deposits, and past performance never guarantees future results.
Guide questions
Is MetaTrader 5 free to use?
Yes — MT5 is free on desktop and mobile. The only money involved is the funds in your own broker account; the platform, charts and order tools cost nothing.
Can I trade gold on an MT5 demo account?
Yes — most brokers, including PU Prime, offer demo accounts with virtual funds so you can practise placing protected XAU/USD trades before going live. It's the recommended first step for every beginner.
What lot size should a beginner use for gold?
The smallest available (usually 0.01) until position sizing is second nature. With a £300 account and 1–2% risk per trade, minimum lots are exactly what the maths calls for — there is no rush to size up.
