When Is the Best Time to Trade Gold? (UK Times, Sessions & Data Releases)

6 min read · Updated 25 September 2026

Gold never really sleeps — the XAU/USD market trades from Sunday evening to Friday evening, UK time. But 'it's always open' is exactly why session timing matters: the hours between the action are where accounts go to die in spread and chop, and a few short windows each day produce the bulk of the movement worth trading.

Here is the gold trading day mapped into UK time — the sessions that matter, the scheduled releases that move the price, and the hours most traders should sit out.

Gold's trading week in UK time

The XAU/USD trading week opens on Sunday evening (around 10pm UK time in winter, 11pm during British Summer Time) and runs continuously until Friday evening. Within that, the day divides into three broad sessions named after the financial centres that dominate them: Asia (overnight UK time), London (the European morning and afternoon) and New York (the US day).

For a UK-based gold trader, that geography is a gift: the two most active sessions — London and New York — happen during normal waking hours.

The London session: 8am UK onwards

The London session is when European liquidity arrives and gold often sets the tone for the day. The first hour or two after the 8am open frequently establish the early range — the high and low that the rest of the morning trades around — and London-based flow is often the first meaningful reaction to overnight news.

Zone and structure traders pay close attention here: reactions at the London open often define the levels the New York session later respects or breaks.

The New York session and the overlap: the busiest hours

US liquidity arrives from early afternoon UK time (the New York markets open at 1:30pm–2:30pm UK depending on the time of year and daylight saving), and the overlap between London and New York — roughly 1:30pm to 4:30pm UK — is traditionally the most liquid, most active window of the gold trading day.

This is where the largest moves most often happen: volume from both sides of the Atlantic is in the market at once, and the day's directional decision frequently gets made here.

The scheduled volatility: US data releases

Some of gold's biggest single moves are not session-driven at all — they're calendar-driven. The US economic calendar regularly produces sharp XAU/USD moves at fixed times:

  • US inflation (CPI) — 1:30pm UK time (8:30am New York).
  • US jobs report (Non-Farm Payrolls) — 1:30pm UK, first Friday of the month.
  • Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions (FOMC) — 7pm UK (2pm New York), plus the press conference half an hour later.
  • Fed officials' speeches — scattered through the New York morning.

The Asia session: the overnight opportunity

While the UK sleeps, the Asia session trades gold in calmer conditions — typically ranging behaviour with smaller moves, punctuated by reactions to Asia-Pacific data. It suits traders who prefer quieter conditions and patient, range-based approaches.

This is precisely why the MGT community runs a dedicated Asia session room (MGT H&C Asia): night-owl members get coverage of the hours the London and New York desks aren't trading.

The hours most gold traders should avoid

Just as important as when to trade is when not to. The hours either side of the New York close (from around 9pm UK) thin out badly: liquidity withdraws, spreads widen, and price can drift on very little volume — the environment where sensible stop losses get slipped and sloppy fills happen. The same caution applies around the daily rollover and in the last hour before major scheduled releases, when spreads widen ahead of the number.

If you're learning, the disciplined habit is simple: trade the liquid hours, skip the dead ones.

How the MGT rooms map to the sessions

Midlands Gold Traders members get coverage across the whole trading day because no single trader can (or should) sit in front of every session. The community's rooms split by desk and style — copy-and-paste beginner groups, session-specific scalping and zone desks, an Asia room for the overnight hours, and a swing room for multi-day positions.

Whichever session you trade, the same risk rules apply: defined stop losses, 1–2% risk per position, and no trading money you can't afford to lose. Gold CFDs are leveraged — losses can exceed deposits — and past performance of any trading desk is never a promise of future results.

Guide questions

What time does the gold market open in the UK?

The XAU/USD week opens on Sunday evening — around 10pm UK time in winter and 11pm during British Summer Time — and trades continuously until Friday evening. Within the day, the London session runs from 8am UK and New York takes over from early-to-mid afternoon.

What is the best time of day to trade gold for beginners?

The London and New York overlap (roughly 1:30pm–4:30pm UK) offers the most liquidity and the clearest movement — but the best time for a beginner is also when they can focus without rushing. Trading with a community that covers the sessions for you means you're never forced to trade tired at 3am.

Which times move gold the most?

The 1:30pm UK data releases (US CPI, Non-Farm Payrolls), the FOMC decision at 7pm UK, and the London/New York overlap window generally produce the biggest XAU/USD moves. Scheduled releases are the ones you can plan for.
